Needless to say, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">anything with wheels and an engine should be at the forefront of your mind on site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From delivery trucks to excavators, if it moves, and it\u2019s got some weight and power behind them, it\u2019s going to cause some damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The key issues<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keeping pedestrians and vehicles apart<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Separate the two wherever you can with careful planning at the design stage.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Minimizing vehicle movements<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide car and van parking away from the work area. Also control entry and plan storage areas so that vehicles don\u2019t need to cross the site.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Turning and reversing vehicles<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A spotter wearing high-vis clothing should guide the driver who can\u2019t see clearly behind their vehicle. Mirrors, reversing, warning alarms, sensors and cameras can also make all the difference.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">People on site<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When untrained workers drive vehicles without authority, you\u2019re in trouble. Always manage the training and activities of drivers, including those visiting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visibility\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The more the better. From on-site lighting to aids for drivers (mirrors, CCTV cameras and reversing alarms) to high-vis clothing for those on the ground.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accidents are preventable when risk is managed. How do you manage risk? You get a plan &#8211; a good one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Traffic management plans<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A traffic management plan documents and helps explain how risks will be managed. This might include details of:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Designated travel paths for vehicles including entry and exit points<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pedestrian and traffic routes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Designated delivery and loading\/unloading areas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Travel paths on routes remote from the workplace, including places to turn around, dump material, access ramps and side roads<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The responsibilities of people expected to interact with traffic onsite<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every site is different, but your plan should be monitored and reviewed regularly.
