Making sure you understand these hazards and how best to minimise these risks is key to ensuring the safety of those working in and around excavations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pre-start checks<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Always check your equipment is fit for use at the beginning of each day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A trained and competent machinery operator should be conducting a pre-start check before use. This gives you the certainty that your equipment is good to go for the day and won&#8217;t cause you any unexpected problems or delays. Things to check are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visual checks before turning the equipment on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fluid and oil levels are sufficient and no leaks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The battery is clean and charged<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Safety mechanisms are in place, working, and not damaged<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Warning signage is in place and readable<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attachments, clips, and pins are in working order and without damage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hydraulics are undamaged and lubricated<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stationary function test while equipment is on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Horn and reversing alarm sound<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Control panel, lights, and pedals are all fully operational<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bucket and arms fully extend and tilt as required<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moving function test:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steering is in good order<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brakes function<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We recommend using your manufacturer&#8217;s pre-operational check sheet and keeping these records with your equipment. Use of the HazardCo <\/span><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/members.hazardco.com\/sites\/default\/files\/Heavy%20Machinery%20Pre-Start%20Checksheet_0.xlsx\">Heavy Machinery Prestart checklist<\/a><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will help you cover these specific checks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Traffic Management<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Managing excavations risks also means managing the risks of other contributing factors such as traffic. Keeping vehicles and pedestrians clear of heavy machinery and excavation works could mean you&#8217;re going to need a traffic management plan. When putting your traffic management plan in place you\u2019ll need to consider the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Directing traffic, including cyclist and pedestrians if applicable<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Delivery and set down areas and schedules<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Worksite layout, speed limits, traffic flow, fencing\/barrier placement, and exclusion zones<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Safe loading\/unloading and turning\/reversing practices<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Site restrictions such as noise or traffic volume\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When the site is unattended and how the excavations are being managed at these times<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emergency procedures<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having a <\/span><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzta.govt.nz\/roads-and-rail\/code-of-practice-for-temporary-traffic-management\/resources\/traffic-management-forms\/\">traffic management plan<\/a><\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in place and discussing this at the time of site inductions means everyone entering the site is aware of the site rules, safe practices, and expectations before commencing work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Zone of Infl<\/b><strong>uence &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Know your limits.<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Heavy machinery, as its name suggests, is heavy and carries a lot of weight. If being operated too close to excavations it can affect the stability of your excavations causing them to collapse. All heavy vehicles, material, and spoil should remain out of the zone of influence plus a metre unless specific designs are in place showing it can support such weight-bearing.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3557\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hazardco.com\/nz\/app\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Capture-198x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>T<b>ip-over<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Uneven and unstable grounds can often lead to machinery tip-over. Tip-overs can cause serious injuries or worse, fatalities. Know the ground conditions you are working with and make sure you are following the outlined safety rules for your site.
