Having the right people involved means workers will have the skills and experience needed to complete the job safely and the task hazards will be easily identified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Workers should be adequately trained to operate machinery. To test this knowledge, workers should\u00a0 be monitored and assessed regularly against operating procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Pre-start checks<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Always check your equipment is fit for use at the beginning of each day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A trained and competent machinery operator should be conducting a pre-start check before use. This gives you the certainty that your equipment is good to go for the day and won&#8217;t cause you any unexpected problems or delays. Things to check are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Visual checks before turning the equipment on:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fluid and oil levels are sufficient and no leaks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The battery is clean and charged<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Safety mechanisms are in place, working, and not damaged<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Warning signage is in place and readable<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attachments, clips, and pins are in working order and without damage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hydraulics are undamaged and lubricated<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stationary function test while equipment is on:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Horn and reversing alarm sound<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Control panel, lights and pedals are all fully operational<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bucket and arms fully extend and tilt as required<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moving function test:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steering is in good order<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brakes function<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We recommend using your manufacturer&#8217;s pre-operational check sheet and keeping these records with your equipment. Use of the HazardCo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/members.hazardco.com\/sites\/default\/files\/Heavy%20Machinery%20Pre-Start%20Checksheet_0.xlsx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><strong>Heavy Machinery Prestart checklist<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will help you cover these specific checks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Quick hitches, safety locks and exclusion zones<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quick hitches allow you to quickly and easily change buckets or attachments on your machinery. When using quick hitches and attachments you should always check the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is the attachment the right size and is it in working order<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Has the attachment been fitted correctly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is the safety locking pin in place and secured<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Has an exclusion zone been set up<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Failing to check these could mean your bucket becomes detached or someone could get hit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>All quick hitches should clearly display the following information:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the model and serial number<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the manufacturer\u2019s name<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the weight and maximum rated capacity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">each<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> lifting point\u2019s capacity.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Safety locking<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> pins need to meet the quick hitch manufacturer&#8217;s specifications and should be kept with the machinery or quick hitch device when not in use.
