{"id":434,"date":"2022-06-21T07:59:15","date_gmt":"2022-06-21T07:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hazardco.bbtdevelopment.com\/nz\/?p=434"},"modified":"2024-05-15T21:23:07","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T21:23:07","slug":"rcds-leads-protection-against-electrical-shock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hazardco.bbtdevelopment.com\/nz\/blog\/rcds-leads-protection-against-electrical-shock\/","title":{"rendered":"RCD\u2019s &amp; Leads \u2013 protection against electrical shock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Electricity is a familiar and necessary part of our everyday lives, but if the risks are not effectively managed, it can be extremely dangerous, causing damage to people and property.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Residual current devices (RCDs)\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All hand-held appliances, light sources, and other electrical equipment used on-site must have protection in place against electric shock, and this can be done simply by ensuring that all electrical equipment is supplied with electricity through an RCD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An RCD constantly monitors the electric current flowing along a circuit, and if an RCD detects a fault, it quickly disconnects the electricity supply \u2013 reducing the risk of electrical shock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>There are three types of RCD:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Fixed at the switchboard<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A switchboard RCD is the best option in most situations. It protects all the electrical wiring and appliances supplied from that circuit. An electrician or electrical inspector must install a switchboard RCD.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Built into the power point<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A socket-outlet RCD is built into a standard power point to provide protection to equipment plugged into that power point and, if required, downstream protection of other power points. An electrician must install a socket-outlet RCD.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Portable\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A portable RCD can be moved from power point to power point as needed. There are a few different types of portable RCD:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some plug directly into a power point. An appliance or extension lead then plugs into the portable RCD.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some are built into extension leads or individual appliance leads.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some are built into Portable socket-outlet assemblies (PSOAs).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No electrician is needed \u2013 you can buy a portable RCD at a hardware shop or electrical equipment supplier, just make sure they are fit for commercial use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both portable and non-portable RCDs should be tested every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Testing<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep you and your team safe while working around electricity by checking your RCD (using the test button) daily before use. Get RCDs tested by a trained and competent person regularly \u2013 at least every three months.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Leads &amp; Cords<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leads and cords are easily damaged, particularly those connected to equipment that is often moved. Make sure leads and cords are suitably set up and protected:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Protect leads and cords from damage. Protection may include drop-over cable protectors, cord covers, non-conductive lead hooks, and cable ramps. Damage can be caused by:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sharp edges and sharp objects\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shoes, boots, or other footwear\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doors\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moving vehicles\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other mechanical forces\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Water, oil, and other liquids\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grease\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Heat.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Arrange leads and cords so that people won\u2019t trip on them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Avoid running leads across aisles or passages.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Raise leads up rather than running them across the ground. Raised leads and plugs should be easy for workers to reach without a ladder.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remove strain on plugs by using insulated supports.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure that leads and cords are checked prior to use for damage and it is also recommended that they are tested and tagged regularly by a competent person<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hazardco-resources.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com\/production\/marketing\/eDM\/Tip+Series-+Electrical+safety.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Check out our one-pager on Electrical Safety<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> you can print and hang up at work so everyone can do their part to manage the risks of electrical shock on-site<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you complete your regular Site Reviews using the HazardCo App, make sure that you are checking RCD\u2019s and all other electrical equipment are in good working condition and have recently been tested and tagged.
